Multi-genre, multi-volume author, DA Wysong introduces us to the second volume in the Monster Hunters of America series, “Unleashed”:
Deanna Schloss flees from the atrocities from Nazi Germany to find refuge in the United States. She is commissioned by the OSS, where she investigates UFOS, and other covert cases. Soon she realizes the Supernatural Horrors are everywhere.

Picture
I am fascinated by this book! It includes famous people in famous and infamous situations! There are presidents, generals, internationally known writers, and others too numerous to mention.
Events with cataclysmic proportions are mentioned including WW2, the holocaust, Roswell, and the continuing UFO invasion.
People calling demons into the earthly plane with devastating consequences.
There are so many crossovers, you may want to keep your seatbelt buckled at all times.
I loved this story!
I am picky about certain things so 4.5 stars from me.

Illustrated and written by V. A. Dawn

Debut Amazon author, V. A. Dawn introduces us to “The Inn on the Isle”:
Welcome to Rodentia, a fantastical Victorianesque world where forest creatures wear the most flattering fashion of the day while traveling by dragonfly carriage. Join Dover and Popplin as they embark upon a grand adventure filled with intrigue and laughter. What happened to the stolen Braybrook jewels? And how will two young squirrels solve the mystery while caring for the respectable (and handsome) guests of Thistle Creek Inn? A smattering of curious woodland creatures join forces to explore one of the most exciting and puzzling events they have ever encountered.

Picture
I loved this story! It was quite easy to be fully immersed in the adventures in Rodentia. The inhabitants are so polite and even the smallest details are consistent with the theme and setting of the book.
The book is so well written, it is a pleasure to spend some time in the inn on the isle with Dover, Popplin, and the others.
4.9 stars from me. I am very picky about certain things.

The Misadventures of a Cryptid Hunter               by Michael Kelso

9/8/2024

Multi-genre, multi-volume author Michael Kelso introduces us to the first in a series, “The Misadventures of a Cryptid Hunter”:
I didn't sign up for this. I never wanted to be a cryptid hunter. I didn’t even believe in cryptids. I always thought they were the stuff of bedtime stories to keep kids quiet and in bed, scared out of their wits, when mom and dad wanted some quality time together.
I was perfectly happy in my boring job as a park ranger. (Not really) But fate had other ideas. When I came face to face with a Bigfoot... everything changed.
Some people are born to greatness, others have it thrust upon them. Then there are still others who trip, fall down a hill backwards, and land face first in a big stinky, steaming, pile of greatness.
I was the latter.
This is the story of that steaming pile that was my life as a cryptid hunter.

Get ready to embark on a wild and hilarious journey with Michael Kelso's "Misadventures of a Cryptid Hunter". This horror-comedy novel follows the unexpected and comically disastrous life of a park ranger turned cryptid hunter. As a skeptic of all things mythical, our protagonist never could have predicted that his life would be turned upside down when he comes face to face with a real-life Bigfoot. Suddenly, he's thrust into a world of cryptids, danger, and hilarity.

Kelso masterfully weaves together horror and humor, delivering a unique and entertaining read for fans of both genres. From the hilarious mishaps and missteps of our clumsy hero, to the spine-tingling encounters with terrifying creatures, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat and laughing out loud.

But it's not all fun and games for our cryptid hunter. As he navigates through this new and dangerous world, he quickly learns that some people are born for greatness, while others just stumble into it - quite literally. Will our hero be able to survive his new calling as a cryptid hunter? And will he ever make it back to his boring park ranger job?

If you love a good scare with a side of laughter and a heap of cryptids, then "Misadventures of a Cryptid Hunter" is a must-read. Kelso's witty writing and unique take on the cryptid trope will have you hooked from the first page. So what are you waiting for? Grab your copy today and join our hero on his hilarious and thrilling adventures.

I love this story! I thought the daily routine of a park ranger would be a piece of cake. The author proves me wrong.

Multi-volume, multi-genre author, Pamela Ackerson introduces us to the first volume in her Museum Series, “The House on Cedar Ridge”:

Transported back in time, a reclusive and timid curator of a haunted museum engages in death-defying battles against a powerful, vengeful witch.

A mysterious ivory fan, a surprise marriage, and the suspicion a witch was among them…

In the great house of Cedar Ridge, secrets whispered along the corridors and hidden crevices. The morning sunlight upon the walls of the museum cast a deceiving appearance of serenity. There were those who wouldn’t know gentle repose, who must be denied peace, because the walls within harbored dangerous and frightening secrets.

The residents of Locke Bay were aware of a stranger in their midst. A woman whose presence was felt by all. Many would soon be aware of her presence and the mystery surrounding her.

No peace could be found; the walls within harbored dangerous and frightening secrets
A mysterious ivory fan, a forced marriage, and a vengeful witch was among them threatened those who sought repose in the great house of Cedar Ridge. Danger and deception whispered along the corridors and hidden crevices. The sunlight upon the walls of the museum cast a deceiving appearance of serenity.

A jealous and angry witch was among them…

Thalia Jefferies believed the danger at the Cedar Ridge Hills Museum had passed and life could begin with new dreams and second chances.

The corridors and hidden crevices in the great house on the crest of the hill whispered warnings of an evil presence. The malevolent danger was as strong and relentless as the waves from Superior.

She had to find help and create a campaign, a series of battles to prove she, too, had the resources to pit powers against the witch's dreadful plans for her future.

The battle lines were drawn.

From award-winning, bestselling author Pamela Ackerson, The Cedar Ridge Hills Museum Box Set time travel adventure has arrived.

This book is creepy! But in a good way! Pam is quite good at setting a dreadfully dark atmosphere and dropping hints that cause you to look over your shoulder now and then. Think twice about reading this book alone unless you enjoy lots of goosebumps.
I enjoyed the twists and turns as Thalia fights to save her life and return to her future where she came from.
The descriptions took me deep into an eerie part of the past of Lake Superior.
Pam is quite an author. She has earned her awards.
I loved the story and you will too.

The Agincourt King by Mercedes Rochelle

The Plantagenet Legacy Book 5

Multi-volume, multi-genre author, Mercedes Rochelle introduces us to the fifth volume in “The Plantagenet Legacy” series, “The Agincourt King”:
From the day he was crowned, Henry V was determined to prove the legitimacy of his house. His father's usurpation weighed heavily on his mind. Only a grand gesture would capture the respect of his own countrymen and the rest of Europe. He would follow in his great-grandfather Edward III's footsteps, and recover lost territory in France. Better yet, why not go for the crown? Poor, deranged Charles VI couldn't manage his own barons. The civil war between the Burgundians and Armagnacs was more of a threat to his country than the English, even after Henry laid siege to Harfleur. But once Harfleur had fallen, the French came to their senses and determined to block his path to Calais and destroy him. By the time the English reached Agincourt, they were starving, exhausted, and easy pickings. Or so the French thought. Little did they reckon on Henry's leadership and the stout-hearted English archers who proved, once again, that numbers didn't matter when God was on their side.

Picture
What a fabulous retelling of history! Mercedes has made me love historical fiction so much that it is my 3rd favorite genre, right after science fiction and fantasy.
She brings to life those pivotal events from long ago with richly detailed stories!
If you like biographies or history, her books give you the best of both worlds! Do yourself a favor and read all of her books!

Multi-genre, multi-volume author, Anna Casamento Arrigo introduces us to her book about a young girl comfortable in her identity, “My Mocha Skin”:
A beautiful story about a little girl who delights in the color of her skin. ‘My Mocha Skin,’ written from a child’s perspective, speaks about the beauty in all of the colors in the world and all its people. Told in a simple rhyming style, it shows how children — and adults — can derive happiness being who they are!

Picture
This story has such a lyrical flow to it. I loved it! The illustrations are delightful and are a perfect fit. The poetic cadence made it so easy to read.
While written for children, the lessons to be learned here apply to everyone.

The Palms by Clay Anderson

Multi-volume author, Clay Anderson introduces us to his latest novel, “The Palms”:
Sixty-eight-year-old Ronnie Wells has recently been paroled for a murder he committed thirty-six years ago. He lives in a run-down trailer park outside Pensacola, Florida. Daily life for Ronnie changes when he befriends Mary, the seven-year-old girl who lives next door with her mother, Clara, a drug-addicted prostitute. In Mary, Ronnie finds the daughter he never got to raise. Clara is reluctant to the friendship at first but soon realizes Ronnie is the only man she’s ever known who didn’t want to use her. To escape Joe, Clara’s violent pimp, Clara and Mary move in with Ronnie. With Ronnie’s help, Clara gets clean, but her past still haunts her. Her relapse kicks off the series of events that lead Joe to kidnap Mary, putting her in the hands of human traffickers. Ronnie must decide if he will return to his old, violent ways to save Mary.

Picture
Literary fiction is an interesting version of almost any genre. The writing is leisurely and permits more depth and texture in a story. Everything is more detailed and the emotions grow naturally.
The Palms is no exception and fits well within this genre.
Exploring the past of some of the characters provides a richly embroidered backdrop for their daily life and actions. The author captured the essence of his characters so well.
I love the story and the writing, however, only 4.5 stars from me because I am so picky about some things.

(Wayfinder Girls Novel Book 1)

Debut author, Mark Snoad introduces us to the first book in the Wayfinder Girls series, “Maggie and the Mountain of Light”:
A respected organization, a hidden purpose, a world-ending threat.

12-year-old Maggie Thatcher longs to be a courageous Wayfinder Girl. But that's not very likely; she is barely coping with life as it is, relying on her asthma inhaler, epi-pen, and the support of her best friend, Anahira Waititi.

Maggie and Anahira attend a Wayfinder 'apocalypse training' camp in London. Despite it being just for fun, the sight of a green-skinned person with other-worldly eyes sends Maggie into a panic, especially as it's a person that only Maggie can see.

And then Maggie learns of a dangerous secret that the Wayfinder Girls have kept hidden from the world. Anahira wants in on the secret. Maggie must decide whether to join her friend, even if she has no idea what that decision will ultimately cost.

Will Maggie face her fears and journey into the unknown?

A Wayfinder Girls adventure filled with mystery, magic, and mayhem.

Picture
I enjoyed this story quite a bit. I was so intrigued by Wayfinder Girls I thought it might be a real organization.
Maggie is a girl full of fears and always on the edge of survival. I would be too if many foods were trying to kill me. She doesn't realize how brave and resourceful she is.
I loved the multi-layered plot and how real many of the characters became.
Five stars from me!

"Lu Bummularu" by Rocco Spano

4/21/2024

The potter tells us the story of Selinunte 628 B.C.

Debut Amazon author, Rocco Spano introduces us to his delightful historical fiction tale, “Lu Bummularu”:
The peculiarity of the book lies in the fact that each chapter is introduced with a poem, which is a nice peculiarity and makes an impact on the reader due to its short nature. A way that splits between short story, poem and novel.
Another striking feature are the illustrations inserted throughout the story.
The story is set in the happy and glorious period of ancient Greece in 628 B.C. in Selinunte and speaks about an object made by the young craftsman Obelius. An object handed down until the 1960s. Bummulu comes from the Greek word 'bombùlion' meaning vase. It would therefore be the story of the creation of a simple container to keep water and wine cool and the adventure of life in Selinunte.
It is a sea voyage from Greece to Sicily, where Obelius with his family and other Megareans set up a new colony under the name of Selinos. This name is due to the smell of celery when arriving there. A fictional tale that describes the dream of realising a new agricultural-commercial polis through the union of everyone's strength to help the community. A book that revives the beauty of ancient Greece in Sicily.
The story begins from Megara Nisea, Greece, with some misadventures during the journey and the landing at the spot pointed out by the oracle. Obelius goes on talking about the construction of Selinunte after three groups of men have explored the area. The hero continues talking about his adventure in Greece and the Olympic Games, life in Selinunte, his family's work and a dire foreboding
What does this book give you?
The story is in a variety of exciting genres, from fiction to history - making reading fun and you feel relaxed.
This book is good for people with not a lot of time to sit down and read. You can read a chapter a day and I think that’s the best way.
If you are an avid reader you can read it all in one go, because the historical content is told with simplicity, abundance of detail, which captivates you and transports you emotionally.
Why not for students, they will learn ancient Greek history in Sicily and Sicilian traditions.
Learning a foreign language is always a challenge. Being constantly exposed to the language one aims to master is the best way to speed up the learning process. It’s not just by listening to a language that you get to learn it. Reading has also been proven to be a very effective way to learn a foreign language as it helps everyone to become familiar with the proper grammar use, the rhythms, forms and rules of the language. The story is fluid, continuous and filled with a variety of helpful vocabulary combined with a grammatical richness.
The best way to learn a new language is by reading, and in this book you will find yourself turning page after page to get to the end of this captivating story that will engage your mind and help you improve your English language.
This book for Beginners has been written especially for students from beginner to intermediate level, designed to give a sense of achievement, and most importantly - enjoyment! Mapped to A2-B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference, this story will both entertain you, and give you a feeling of progress while reading.
What does this book give you?
· This story Is an exciting genres, from fiction to history-making reading fun, while you learn a wide range of new vocabulary
· Controlled language at your level, to help you progress confidently and improve your speaking ability
· Pleasure! It's much easier to learn a new language when you're having fun, and research shows that if you're enjoying reading in a foreign language, you won't experience the usual feelings of frustration.

Picture
I love historical fiction and I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It differs from many other books because it has simple illustrations and short poetry that precedes each chapter.
Another thing that sets this book apart from many other historical fiction books is that the story is a vehicle to share detailed information about life during a glorious part of ancient Greek history.
The author does a marvelous job of pulling off this trick. The story is pleasant to read and the details of daily life, commerce and customs are quite interesting.
I enjoyed this book a great deal and give it 4.7 stars.

Searching For Zen

A tale of Divine Destiny by Albert T. Franklin

Debut fantasy author, Albert T. Franklin introduces us to his deep fantasy story, “Searching For Zen":
In a world where Earth intertwines with realms of fantasy and science fiction, a humble boy is bestowed with a divine destiny, thrusting him into a journey of self-discovery and perilous adventure.

Our story begins on Earth, but an Earth with a past steeped in fantasy, myths, and legends. From humble beginnings, a boy is given a divine destiny, a chance to make his mark on human civilization, but he must embark upon a life-changing journey. Our hero struggles to understand what he has been given and what to do with it, losing himself in doubt and loneliness as he confronts the dark side of humanity.

Coming of age, Zen finds strength in himself, builds a family from a motley collection of strangers, and discovers love. His newfound friends help him open up, learn to trust others, and eventually understand his reason for fighting. The trials he faces throughout his quest amplify as his power increases, and he even sparks the ire of those in the spirit realm, who doubt any human can wield such power successfully.

As Zen grapples with the weight of his purpose and the sacrifices it demands, he learns that the true power lies not in his abilities alone, but in the bonds of love, friendship, and the resilience of the human spirit
Picture
A classic trope in fantasy, the quest, is explored with care and thought. I enjoyed the story quite a bit, but occasionally a character would break out in very modern speech forms and that jolted me out of the story a few times. I recovered quickly.
Spiritual beings, guides and semi-gods brought an interesting dimension I don't see very often in fantasy stories and I enjoyed that. I need to look harder for stories in that vein.
There was also a nice variety of non-human creatures that added a pleasant flavor.
No spoilers from me but some of the minor characters are very evil and some are not.
4.6 stars from me. I am hard to please.

Multi-volume, multi-genre author, Anna Casamento Arrigo introduces us to her collection of poetry and short stories, “On the Wings of My Fancy”:
On The Wings Of My Fancy is not just a book of poetry. and short stories. It's a meditation of life and longing and disappointment and death, although not necessarily in that order. In life, we live and breathe and dance and love, and when it's over, there is the other side. Ms. Arrigo captures the moments in time that we all wish we could have once more. Evocative, rich in detail, On the Wings Of My Fancy weaves a tapestry of existence that you won't soon forget.

Anna is so capable of expressing herself in very few words. I am amazed by her poetry and her stories are weighty with emotion. I enjoy all of her writing and am always pleasantly surprised by what her words form within me.
Thank you, Anna. Don't stop writing, I think you are just hitting your stride.

Evercharm book 3

Multi-volume, fantasy author S. D. Reeves introduces us to the third book in the Evercharm series, “A Song in the Dark”:
Everyone seeks her song. But who among them is prepared to die for it...

On a perilous mountain pass, Niena, the girl known as The Melody of Three, undertakes a treacherous journey with her fairy queen step-grandmother to escape all those who wish to control her. Niena's gift is also her curse. As the descendant of three races, she is the only one who can play the Evercharm, the lyre used to create the fairy, elf, and human worlds. For sorcerer Christaan De Rein and his trusted apprentice Higgins, he needs Niena for the protection of the Curators. But after one long week into their journey to capture her, it feels as if they are chasing shadows.

When those shadows transform into seething Udur, the Teamor's vicious hounds, Rein's traveling party are not the only ones in imminent danger. Niena is learning fast that reality is not all that it seems. And if creation is to be stopped from unraveling completely, she must decide exactly who she can trust...

Superb high fantasy! I love this storyline and this book caps the trilogy in a beautiful and unexpected way. I am committed to no spoilers.
<Gritting my teeth.>
This story has some languid moments that permit you to revel in the beautiful writing. In other places, the plot will leave you gasping for breath. Throughout the writing is wonderful.
The characters are quite solid if you have read the preceding volumes. If you start with this book you will still find that they develop fully as the story progresses.
Please don't ask me to pick a favorite character, I can't. I love several of them for different reasons.
I must warn that there are some pretty scary parts, so don't read late at night alone.
I award 4.9 stars to this magnificent story. I know, I am hard to please and picky as all get out.

The John Bailey Saga (Book 1)

Multivolume, multi-genre author, John Bailey introduces us to the first volume in the John Bailey Saga, “The Other Side of the Hayfields”:
As the clouds of the civil war rise, a young man becomes entangled in a slave dispute and struggles to find the path to justice.

John Bailey lives on a humble Virginia farm. He discovers the world around him with his younger brother Benjamin and his best friend Danny, who lives at the plantation across the fields. As the years roll on, Mr. Kraus tutors them at the plantation home, but as John grows older, he grapples to understand the greed and prejudice among some of the ruling class, including his best friend.

Questions run deep in his heart as he sees his family farm struggle. Dismay haunts him as plantation owners use slaves to bask in their wealth. John also wrestles with a deepening attachment to Sarah, who lives on the plantation. It’s a secret friendship – she’s a slave. But how can he tell her he must leave the farm? He seeks to build his own life.

Then one brutal night, just before John is to leave, he is confronted by the horrors of slavery and must make a choice: Live with the moral consequences of standing silent in a world where the lines of right and wrong are becoming increasingly blurred or choose the dangerous and deadly road to justice. Ill-prepared for the consequences, John flees with Sarah and her brother Josiah to navigate the treacherous waters of a divided society. Will the common man help them? Will John be able to uncover the mysterious underground railroad? Can he survive the wrath of slave owners and bounty hunters as he holds dear to his dreams, and those he loves?

The Other Side of the Hayfields is a gripping historical novel that explores the moral dilemmas of a young man facing poverty, war, and social injustice while a nation is torn apart with the clouds of civil war rising on the horizon.

This is a wonderful story, examining the immediate world of a teenage boy on the cusp of manhood in the mid-1800s and how circumstances force many changes on him and those around him.
I love the story and the writing. The author varies the pace from a casual stroll to a frenetic race against time and enemies. I also love how the author weaves local and faraway historical events to move the story on its path.
Very good story, I look forward to more. 4.8 stars from me.

Rock, Paper, Innocence: A Memoir of Love and Loss by Steve Schuler

2/18/2024

Multi-volume author, Steve Schuler introduces us to his intimate memoir, "Rock, Paper, Innocence":
Struggling through his teenage years, he seldom smiled, rarely laughed. Then one day, while walking down the steps of Kimball high, a girl with mousey brown hair and a crooked smile stopped him mid-step. She asked his name. Said she knew his sister. Neither realized this would be the beginnings of a lifelong love affair—and much like the steps where they met, their journey would have its ups and downs. At seventeen, an anonymous letter would upend both their lives, but none as significant as cancer. Hoping to leave more than broken hearts and faded photographs, they decided to share their secrets. Swirling around a lifetime of memories was a medallion, a ring, an emerald cross, and an anonymous letter.

Writing this book has been an emotional release for me and helps soften the anger and lessen the hurt of a broken heart. I hope these writings will give insight into what shaped our destiny and how we became inseparable and forever in love. May our story also help heal your wounds as much as it has mine. I have heartfelt joy in sharing this story with you

I loved this memoir. I am almost the same age as the author and lived through many similar circumstances. High School was torturous in many ways, not the least of which was asking girls out on dates. The Vietnam War and the protests against it are a familiar backdrop for me. I did not get drafted because the war was winding down. I still have my draft card.
Steve's story of Ryan and Lilla is so much more than any of those phases of life, this story goes to the heart of how difficult it can be to create and build a family. There are so many things that work against any success in that endeavor.
Ryan and Lilla are archetypes of so many teens in many decades. Fabulous story and good writing!

The Beginner’s Guide to Being Evil                      by Craig Crawford

2/10/2024

Multi-volume, multi-genre author, Craig Crawford introduces us to his satirical book on negative morality, “The Beginner’s Guide to Being Evil”:
Hey! I'm Dave. And you have questions. You're probably starting with this one:

"Why should I not only buy, but actually read this book?"

Look, no matter what religious doctrine, books, laws, or commandments you follow (and even if you don't), 100% of you have committed sins, shameful deeds, etc. (Quit lying to yourself, yes you have. For some of you, it probably happened within the past hour.) Ergo, when you reach the afterlife, for a lot of you there’s going to be a closed door to the escalator heading Upstairs, probably guarded by two big goons with big stupid wings.

Shock of all shockers! You’re headed Downstairs.

"So, what happens down there, Dave? Is it really all that bad?"

Welp, I'll be honest. Most of you are probably looking at spending the rest of eternity working in wart diagnostics, slaving away in a food court (haha, "food"), or any of a thousand other awful careers. Did I mention the plumbing level?

"Isn’t there any hope, Dave?"

Oh, I'm so very glad you asked!

In my book, I give you the skinny and the lowdown on EVIL. What it is, how it works, and how to use said information therein to make your afterlife less pitiful. Heck, there’s even a test to assess your evil skills to see where you stack up and decide if you should work a little harder to better your situation. Because you can! Better your afterlife situation, that is.

Sure, you can ignore me. But while I’m not all "omniscient" like the Big Guy Upstairs (cheater), I’ll know whether you snubbed me because the old adage stands: you can’t bullsh-- a bullsh--er.
What’s a few measly bucks anyway if it earns you a decent apartment in the hereafter? Then you can point and laugh at all your friends who gave you crap for buying the book. (Trust me, they’re on their way Downstairs, too.)

So, come on! Don’t be afraid. You might actually learn something of value…not like high school and college—and it’s a lot cheaper!

~ Dave E. Lish

I have read several of Craig's sci-fi/horror books and had no idea he could write such funny stuff! There were a few funny lines scattered here and there in those other books that I loved so much but there was no hint of Craig's real comedic genius.
I am committed to not giving spoilers but I will say don't ignore the footnotes. There is a joke and humor around almost every comma and period.
I loved this book! 4.9 stars from me!

Multi-volume, historical-fantasy-thriller author, Rob Samborn introduces us to the third volume in the Painted Souls series:
“Impossible odds.
A relentless pursuit.
The brink of world domination.

With her husband imprisoned in eternal purgatory, Julia O’Connor and her friends must use every tool in their arsenal to stop Salvatore della Porta from completing his plan of global supremacy through Veritism—the one veritable religion—and save millions of souls from a similar fate.

Della Porta’s men doggedly track the team across Europe to Asia and back to Venice, as they seek an age-old journal that will either catapult della Porta to triumph or crush him for good. To free the souls and end the madness, they must also unearth an ancient relic that can destroy the Sun Crystal—the key to our past, present, and future.

In a final, desperate gambit, Julia and her band of renegades have one last chance to save her husband, liberate the imprisoned souls, and stop della Porta from gaining boundless power. Their every move is a race against destiny in this gripping, globe-spanning historical thriller.”

I was on the edge of my Kindle for nearly the entire story!
The author's writing is superb! He paints such a wonderful picture in my mind with location details in the right amount. That is an important balance to find difficult to maintain because too little detail and the reader is left in the dark, too much detail can muddy the story or plot.
I am babbling because I don't give spoilers but this time it's so hard because I want to exult about the ending! I loved it.
You will just have to read it for yourself. Do yourself a favor and start with the first book, you can thank me later.
I give this story 4.8 stars.

Weapons won’t kill it and the only group who might be able to save humanity is Project Threshold.

An amazing story! I hope it is not real. The characters seem quite realistic to me. Facing an unknown foe, people are dying left and right. The creature seems to not be hampered by the laws of physics. Will the PT organization survive this threat?
I love this series and this book. The author has a very deft hand and pours out the words onto the page with the utmost care. There is not an extra or unnecessary word in the story. Fabulous writing!
If you like short stories, you will love this series. Each adventure can stand alone.
If you like long stories and intricate plots, you will derive plenty of enjoyment because all of these stories are connected in multiple ways.
I am excited for the new batch of stories!

The Adventures of John the Pecan: A Tale of Three Parts by Seth Tomlinson

12/24/2023

Science fiction, fantasy, action and adventure author Seth Tomlinson introduces us to his debut book, “The Adventures of John the Pecan: A Tale of Three parts”:

Charlie Duffer has always been one for adventure. Or so he says. But living in the year 2112, where nobody likes to just sit and talk to each other anymore, Charlie hardly gets an opportunity to test this bold claim he makes about himself. However, after stumbling upon an unexpected new friend in his lonely Idaho town, strange turns of events force Charlie to reevaluate what is and what isn’t reality, both for the outside world and his inner self. Meanwhile, others who hide in the shadows just down the road start to wrestle with their own demons, having to come to grips with the past while keeping up with the unfolding of a local mystery that’s been hidden for a while.
If things on our planet aren’t always what they seem, the same can surely be said about the universe itself. And Charlie and his friends find themselves right in the middle of the confusion, fighting off a corrupt government leader with plans that reach towards eternity on one side, and a darkness created by the sins of the common people that threatens to destroy everything that one of their dear friends loves on the other side. As they make many friends along the way, the fight to figure out the answer to the chaos is not an easy one. And the answer is not what anybody expects.

Picture
This story is a somewhat intricate plot with multiple threads. Trust me, hang in there and you will be rewarded with a nice surprise.
This story is also fun; a few kids who become friends and find more friends along the way wind up facing a large conspiracy that threatens the world and other worlds.
I don't want to say any more for fear of spoiling the story.
The author’s writing voice is quite interesting, it is homey and comfortable. I am certain I would enjoy sitting on the porch and discussing books and the world.
It's a good story, I laughed in many places.
You will enjoy it also.

Project Threshold: Team Riker: Division A by Craig Crawford

12/10/2023

Multi-volume, science fiction horror author Craig Crawford introduces us to his third volume in the Project Threshold series, “Team Riker: Division A”:
In Alaska, all manner of entities and monsters cross into our world from other dimensions and Hannah Riker and her team are the gatekeepers. Riker has a personal score to settle, hunting the monster that slaughtered her parents when she was a girl. Neville, Toddy and Melissa McCoy have her back as they follow in the wake of beings dispensing justice and marking their victims. They intervene on a resort where people disappear even during daylight, fend off a tribe of furry humanoids claiming ownership of a valley, and they stumble upon an ancient, unkillable entity bent on the destruction of humanity.

Picture
I love these stories, these case files! The book is fashioned as a collection of case files for a particular team. Each book is for a different team. These teams are part of a secret government program to protect the Earth from aliens and the supernatural. Anything unexplainable and unconventional.
The stories don't usually have a happy ending but sometimes they do. The author has a wonderful knack for telling an exciting story without using a lot of words. Descriptions are just enough; action is clearly described also. The dialogues carry the story along so well, the characters are cleverly delineated with economical wording.
You are going to love these fascinating and action-filled stories! 4.8 stars from me.

Picture
Written in first person, this is an epic story in the sci-fi military genre and I love it. It rang so true for me with the descriptions of training and action.
I love that we really get to know the characters in this expansive tale. They become quite real. Liam might be one of my favorites because he does his job as ordered. Mouth is also a favorite because he can't shut up and has an opinion about everything. My mouth got me into a lot of trouble when I was in basic training.
I was sorry the story had to end. 4 stars.

Stop That Foolishness & Eat: Tale of a Black Anorexic by Mariah Shannon

Amazon debut author, Mariah Shannon introduces us to her first book, “Stop That Foolishness & Eat: Tale of a Black Anorexic”:

For decades, the African American community has viewed eating disorders as a problem that we just don't have. But I am here to tell you that it's just not so. Starving in both body and spirit, my issues gobbled me up, one pound at a time. I share my journey from the internal depths of hell in my mind to health and sanity.

Let's not pretend that our communities are immune to mental health problems. I hope to help you, the reader, or someone you know to conquer this soul-sucking disease and rise like a phoenix from the ashes of self-loathing.

Picture
This story has been ignored for much too long. Mental illness doesn't care about skin color. Anorexia and bulimia are not lifestyles they are mental illnesses.
Thank you, Mariah, for explaining this clearly and unequivocally.
I shed several tears while reading about the abuse endured by the author as a child.
Almost everyone knows someone who might be suffering silently but visibly from a disorder of one kind or another. Don't ignore or enable this person. They need help.
I give 4.8 stars to Stop That Foolishness & Eat.

Multi-volume, horror-and-science-fiction author Craig Crawford introduces us to the second volume in his genre-mashup series, Project Threshold, “Team Talise: Division 2”:

Talise Randall leads Division-2, dropping in to protect us while trying to keep her own team safe. With minor psychic powers and learning from Kali who’s even more powerful, Bodi and Milla complete their ranks. Team Talise goes head to head with an unstoppable entity, an otherworldly jealous boyfriend, a haunted museum, a Victorian home with much more than a ghost, and her team discovers what happens to all those lost socks from people’s dryers.

These short stories are like the best parts of a novel! Without the intervening scenes and setups, we get to enjoy the good stuff immediately!
The author has a real knack for description, the pictures in my mind form effortlessly. He has a good balance between prose, action and dialogue.
I can't say a lot more without giving away spoilers. The first story was downright scary. The second story was scarier! You get the idea. All of the stories are scary.
Don’t get me wrong, the author has woven in some funny bits also and I dearly love to laugh and chuckle.

Team Talise gets 4.9 stars from me!

Petals by Anna Casamento Arrigo

Multi-volume, multi-genre author Anna Casamento Arrigo introduces us to her collection of poetry, “Petals”:
“Petals,” Anna says, “is, in essence, learning how to walk when you, on some days, are forced to crawl. Moreover, it’s about defining and redefining the self, and, ultimately, learning some new recipes for those proverbial lemons!”

Petals showcases her love of life and all that we can achieve, and that the better part of ourselves is ourselves! “But most importantly,” as Anna believes, “Kindness ALWAYS Matters!”

I am always surprised by poetry. My expectations always fall short and this volume captured my heart in several ways. The feelings that arise within me are the result of the poet's words and teach me more about myself than about the poet.
I seek a favorite in each volume and that is such a difficult task. Puppet Master will do until I read the poems again.
4.9 stars for Petals!

"I'm very pleased with all your efforts. Twitter promotion and proofreading were beyond what I expected with a book review. Your suggestions throughout the process of refining both books helped me immensely. I look forward to working with you again."   A.E.H Veenman “Dial QR for Murder” and “Prepped for the Kill”
