I really enjoyed reading about Tom, he has a good heart and wants to do the right thing. However, he is full of angst about his past and doubts about his future. He learns that he has magical abilities in the midst of battle, which surprises him and all of his companions who are sworn to protect him.
Mr. Hoyt has created a wonderful world with a realistic mixture of good and evil. The action is well paced and the characters develop in a timely fashion. This fantasy world is populated with many different characters. There are plenty of allusions to histories and relationships which provide nice texture to the story. There are some interesting plot twists that generate considerable excitement and make it hard to put the book down. I award 4 stars out of 5.
