Trina has written a good book it will help people avoid common pitfalls and build their self-esteem. It’s a little bit of a do-it-yourself guide for teens and adults. Trina presents a number of common scenarios that many people face at one time or another, she walks through the situations offering advice, encouragement and support. These helps are hard to come by sometimes.
Trina is full of optimism and has great concern for young people and especially girls and young women. Trina says over and over to stay hopeful, look to the future and work hard to make it better for yourself and the ones you love.
She has a lot to say about making wise choices also in all the important matters of life. Family, school, significant relationships, and the workplace are all areas critical to a person’s success.
I am a grandfather of four girls and I will recommend they read this when they reach the appropriate age.
I give How to Live a score of 4.8, it’s well worth reading for all ages.

You will find my book a good read for anyone who wants to focus on how others never gave up and found a way to ‘start over.’

I did enjoy your book Trina. Thank you for writing it. Before we get going, would you please tell us a little bit about yourself and why you wrote this series of books?

Thanks Mark. I wrote my series of books because I want to help others discover themselves sooner than I did. Because I did not have a confidant or a mentor, I made many mistakes in my life growing up. My books are based upon true life experiences. If I can help one person find herself or himself in my books and learn from my mistakes, I will have accomplished my goal for writing my books.

I think almost all of us can say that we have made many mistakes. Many times the consequences of one choice can shape the rest of your life. For good or ill.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Yes Mark, I agree that many of us make mistakes throughout our life. However, I believe some mistakes can be avoided. There are many situations I address in my book that I believe we (women) ask ourselves but do not have anyone to help us answer the questions we have; when I was growing up I did not have anyone to ask.
To share something about me. I am a native of Louisiana. Because I was searching for my own identity, I left Louisiana at a very early age and moved to California. While in California, I pursued my education and completed my MBA. Because I never had anyone I could seek advice from, many of my decisions were made based upon my situation at that period of my life. If I had a trusted friend, I probably would have married a different type of man, completed a different type of degree, and pursued a different type of career.

I have heard Louisiana is a beautiful state. I have never been there.
Without the support of trusted advisors we can only make decisions based on what we know. When we are young we frequently don't know enough to make the wisest decisions.
New questions.
What is your routine when you sit down to write?
What software do you use to write and publish your books?

When I write, I do not have a set method; I write when I feel something. For example, I could be sitting in the backyard drinking a cup of copy and a thought enters my mine. Or I may wake up from a deep sleep and a thought enters my mind. Because I never know when a thought will present itself, I keep a notepad nearby. I remember one time I wrote my thoughts in my notepad after waking up from a deep sleep. When I read it the following morning, I was surprised what I wrote. So I never know when an idea will present itself.

To share my writing, I use Microsoft Word to write and Kindle Publishing Direct application to self-publish my books.

New questions.
Did your writing process change much from your first book to your current book or did it stay the same?
Does writing have a spiritual or healing component for you, does it energize you or make you feel tired?

Because my books are based mostly on true life experiences, I have to say that my writing process stayed the same. My first book is for young girls who have not experienced adult life. My second book is based upon adults who are experiencing adult situations. My third book focus on starting over versus giving up or remaining in a negative state of mind. Life gives us challenges everyday.
For the preteens, I want them to understand that asking for advice from a ‘trusted’ adult is the best thing they can do for themselves at a young age. Regardless of their situation at home, they must find someone, a school counselor or a family member, to express their ideas with.
For the young adults, I want them to understand the reasons they are experiencing some pitfalls. I offer guidance to them that I wish I had at their age to overcome and distance themselves from their current dissatisfied state.

My books have a healing component to it. I consider my books a form of therapy for me. I am a better person to myself because of my writing. When I began writing, it was to help me understand myself based upon the decisions I made. I was not satisfied with my life; I began to ask myself why. In order to write, I had to dig deep within myself and deal with some things I did not know needed to be addressed. I had to accept the reason for the relationship I had with my mother. I had to accept the reasons why I focused on insecure men. Then I thought about the things I was writing and how I can help young girls not make the same mistakes as I did. So yes, writing was a healing element for me.

Thank you, Trina, for sharing so candidly. It's wonderful that your writing has been so helpful for you. I appreciate you sharing some aspects of your life and the overview of your books.
For so many people, life experiences are very similar, almost all of us have been hurt and have gone through one kind of trauma or another. Each person's trauma is very individual and their response can vary widely even if the traumas are similar.
New questions.
How much time passes from when you get the idea to write your book, to actually starting the book and finishing the first draft?
How many drafts do you go through to have a ready-to-publish manuscript?

I would say that much time passed before I self-published my first manuscript. The first two years, I was writing my thoughts and trying to understand my life. The third year, I began pondering on the idea of putting my revelation in a book. Afterwards, it took months to organize my thoughts and feel confident enough to share it with the world.

Once I was comfortable with the manuscript, I must have reviewed and revised it numerous of times. For 6 months, I would review it and make changes at least every other week. I wanted to make sure that I was reading what was written which means checking for grammatical errors. I shared my manuscript with my brother and his wife to get another opinion before I released it. When my brother and his wife liked it, I was ready to release it.

Your process was very intense over a long period of time. I have a hunch that time was necessary, you have to sure that introspection is taking you where you want to go. It's very easy to get side-tracked and go down a rabbit hole, to a dead end.
You went to a lot of work to be certain your book was ready. Sometimes, family members have a hard time giving honest advice, they want to see their sibling or child succeed. You were lucky to have a wonderful brother like that.
New questions.
Going back in time, did you do any kind of creative writing, even back in grade school?
How early was it that you realized how powerful words can be?

In grade school, I remember being confident in spelling. Because I enjoyed my spelling classes, I have to believe that I enjoyed writing in grade school also.
I think I became a confident writer during my employment years. I had to write processes and procedures for my employers. When I began training and found that most offices did not have a training manual, I found myself writing office procedure manuals for each location.
In addition, I wrote emails to my superiors on the training completed at each location. Because I was training office staff at different locations, I found that writing what I did and why was important because it kept everyone informed. No one could say that they did not know a process or procedure. When one employee decided to challenge me and say that she was not taught a specific process at that moment I realized the power of words. I realized that a written word versus a verbal conversation will be my standard form of communicating. So, I think I realized the importance and power of words late in life after many years of employment.

I love that early love of words you had, it mirrored my own. We were both spelling aces.
A written procedure is very important in many different situations. It allows for continuity of practice and eliminates the need to reinvent the wheel each time a small bump is hit.
That was an interesting moment for you, I am sure. That woman challenging you about her training. That was a pivotal or marker moment for you.
New questions.
Now that you have a published several books, are you writing anything strictly for yourself or are you concentrating on writing for your readers?
What are common traps for beginning writers?

Reply
TRINA JORDAN link
11/12/2018 07:56:16 pm

When I write, I write for myself then I make sure that my readers can relate to it. For me, I have to experience or know of the experience in order to write about it. I focus on the readers when I complete my writing. Afterwards, I think of different scenarios on how to reach each reader through my writings. I focus on making sure that all questions were answered.

I have to say that my common trap was thinking that I did not need a professional proofreader. I proof read my manuscript many times. I had my brother and sister proof read my manuscript.
I found that it does not matter how many times you proof read your own work, you never see the common grammatical mistakes that are staring you in the eye. Your family proof read your work, they may see the mistakes but focus on what they believe you are saying but not what is written. Therefore, I have to say that a common trap for beginning writers is to believe that there are no grammatical errors in their books.

You have a very methodical process for your writing. It seems to work well for you. Every writer has their own method.
I certainly agree with you about the need for proofreading. I read over 50 books a year, not including my proofreading. It has been over a year since finding a book without any spelling errors.
New questions.
Do you think a strong ego is an asset or liability for a writer and why?
What is the most valuable piece of advice you have ever received from another writer?

Reply

I think a strong ego is a liability not an asset. I believe that if you have a strong ego, you are not adaptable to change. As a writer, displaying a strong ego may prevent you from listening to others, and adapting to the change needed to improve upon your writing. You may feel that your writing is fine the way it is. But if you listen to others’ advice, you may crossover to new readers.

I believe that the most valuable advice I received from another writers is that it is okay to receive negative feedback. Once you allow yourself to accept negative feedback, you are allowing yourself to grow and think outside of the box (differently). You begin to ask yourself, is the negative feedback accurate? Although you may not be comfortable with the negative feedback, you take the negative feedback and ask other writers to concur and share their thoughts why. I prefer to listen to readers and writers who want to help you grow and improve upon your writing versus wanting to demean you and your writing. I truly believe that people’s thoughts matter.

Thinking you are right all the time is a serious liability, no doubt. There's always room for improvement and a little humility can facilitate growth.
That is some very important advice. It makes so much sense. Unfortunately, there are people who seem to enjoy dragging other people down. Their criticisms fall flat with no real impact. I think others recognize that kind of foolishness easily.
Honest criticism is worth so much, a fresh pair of eyes is necessary.
New questions.
Do you have anything you consider to be your writing lucky charm?
What is the biggest obstacle you face in writing?

No, unfortunately I do not have a lucky charm; other than the need to share knowledge. When I get a thought in my head, I wonder about the effects it had on me and would it help others realize the causes of the effect sooner than I did.
I think my biggest obstacle is deciding what to write. Then, make time to write. Prior to writing about my life experiences, I was a very private person. Today, I like to thank that I am still a private person. So, deciding on what to write and how much to share is an obstacle for me.

I think every author puts a bit of themselves into their books. For many, it's not nearly as much as you do. That leads right into my next question.
How do you balance the demands on your time as a writer with personal relationships?
Do you have any other passions to pursue if you didn't write?

Reply

Currently, I do not have to worry about balancing my time to write with finding time for my personal relationships. Spending time is easy to maneuver with friends and family because everyone is busy during the week. If I had a special person in my life, then I might have to find time to balance being with him versus focusing on my writing; I am looking forward to experiencing this dilemma because I began writing after my breakup with my boyfriend. I am looking forward to finding that special person to experience the balance of writing and spending time with him; it will be a nice new dilemma for me.

Yes, my other passion is to pursue my adventurous side. The majority of my life has been working, and working. I want to find a job that will allow me to work and play at the same time. For example assist in operating a bed and breakfast (B&B) facility. At a B&B, I believe you are required to participate in the surrounding activities such as water rafting, skiing, and other activities at or near the B&B. this is a passion of mine I hope to participate in very soon.

You certainly are an adventurous person. You are also pretty lucky as a writer, because so many people have struggles finding the balance between family, writing, and work.

Do you think reading, watching movies or listening to music help you be a better writer?

Fortunately, I do not struggle with writer’s block. When I get an idea, I decide on how to share it. After I start writing about it, other thoughts seem to flow. When the thoughts stop, I stop writing until the thoughts begin to flow again. You know, maybe I do have writer’s block but I think of it as a time to step away and focus on something else.

No, I do not depend upon reading, watching movies, or listening to music to inspire me to be a better writer. Because I write based upon personal life experiences, I have to say that I write when I am inspired by something I see, feel or wish for. I write to hear myself, I write to feel better about my life situations. Once I decide to share my writing, I depend upon others to make it better by receiving their feedback. Then, I use other’s feedback to help me be a better writer.

There are many writers who struggle with writers block. I have heard several methods for dealing with it. Your method of stepping away is used by more than one writer. It works for you and other writers.
It makes sense you don't need movies or music to inspire your writing. What you are writing about is different from a lot of other writers.
New questions.
Besides your family members, who else helps you polish your stories?
Who designed the cover of your book?
What do the elements on the cover represent?

I do not have anyone to help polish my stories, unfortunately, other than my family. Because my writing shows some of my personal life experiences, my main reason for having my family review my work is to make sure they are aware of my writing. I want them to know before anyone else what I have written so that they can share their opinion.
I use Kindle Publishing book cover creator to choose the design of my books. The element of my first book represents a butterfly. We know that a butterfly symbolizes change, growth, and transformation. Because my first book focuses on preteens who are changing into teens, I want to help them make the changes.
The element of my second book symbolizes that paths can change. Just because we made bad decisions, it does not mean we cannot change I path to improve upon the bad decisions. The important thing is to recognize your current path and ask yourself ‘do I need to change it.’
The element of my third book symbolizes the ‘deep in thought’ a person can be. Have you ever been so deep in thought that the corner of your eyes hurt or there is pain at the top of your nose it hurts to breathe? When I saw that picture, I felt that it symbolizes all of the experiences I shared in my book.

Unless someone introduces me to a better method of publishing my books, I plan to continue publishing with Kindle Publishing Direct.

Unfortunately, I am not subscribed to any magazines, newsletters, or podcasts to enhance my writing career. I have a blog (at https://trinamjordan.blogspot.com/) to show my thoughts and hope that others share theirs.

I do not have a favorite reference book for writing. I use the internet. The internet is filled with educational tools to help with my writing. For example, to show the empty spaces in my writing, I found information on the internet that shows all we have to do is click ‘control H.’

There are a lot of good blogs out there. I find I don't have time for podcasts because I can read so much faster. One of my favorites is https://lindasclare.com/ and another is https://www.thecreativepenn.com/. There are others I enjoy, those are the first two that come to mind.
You are so right, the internet has a lot of reference material. I have found quite a few, I even found a dictionary of Australian slang. I have clients in Australia so it has come in handy.

I would like to connect with authors in real life. I think it would be nice to meet up in person with real authors biweekly or monthly in a non-formal setting. Meeting up with authors in real life would equate to having critique partners. With critique partners, we would share our writings with each other and receive feedback on it. We would share ideas on what helped us sell books, and what we can do to improve upon our writings.

I think that Is a wonderful goal. I believe that would be very helpful for all concerned, in a critique group like that. There are several ways you can accomplish this, I am sure. Would you like to brainstorm about this with me?
New questions, in the meantime.
Do you think you were born to write or did you have to learn the craft?
What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

Mark, I would welcome the opportunity to brainstorm about a gathering of authors; I would like that very much.
.
I do not think I was born to write. To write was a learned craft which I am learning still. Looking back, I wish I had taken more English classes. I wish I had pursued Journalism. Because I did not focus on my writing and education at an early age in life, I have to believe that I was not born to write.

I think my most difficult part of my artistic process is to know what to share. Before self-publishing my writing, I would write for myself. Because I was a very private person, I never thought I would share my experience for others to see. So the most difficult part of my creative process is opening myself up for ridicule or letting strangers know my thoughts.

Here are a few ideas to start with to connect with writers in real life. I think there is a tremendous amount of value to be had in that circumstance. There is also greater risk, because you lose a great deal of anonymity that can be maintained in virtual life like twitter.
Check Twitter for writers that live in your state, a lot of people put the state or region where they reside in their twitter bio.
You could also do web search for writers and writers groups in your town or county.
You could check in your local library and book stores to find writers and writers groups.
If there is a college or university nearby, that might prove fruitful. The literature teachers even in high school may know of people who are writers.
Inquiries in any group of people, even church could lead to other writers.
Just ask everyone you meet, you will find writers somewhere.
If you don't have any business cards for your writing this would be a good time to get those. All you need is your name, your twitter, your Amazon page, your linkedIn, and an email. I would setup a separate email for writing, if you don't already have one.
If you are not real tech savvy like me, get an easy to build website also. I use Weebly, it's simple drag and drop, no code is needed. I have found them to be very helpful.
Those are my ideas, what ideas do you have?
Your writing is very personal, although there are elements of fiction in there also. That is a small measure of protection. You have given a great deal of yourself to this project. I think there will be many who appreciate your writing in the years to come. You will be someone's favorite author.
I have heard many authors say they are always learning. I think you have a lot of company. You will find that to be true as you connect with other authors.
New questions.
What was the earliest experience that made you realize that you could influence and change lives with the power of writing?
How do you celebrate when you publish a book?

Reply

You mentioned the majority of steps to take to communicate live with authors. Another one I would like to add is going to a local bookstore (brick and mortar). A community bookstore owner might know of local authors who meet up to share their work.

My earliest experience that made me realize that I could influence and change lives with the power of writing was from my last breakup. I decided to step away from dating and focus on my life. I began reading my journal. I realized that if I was honest with myself, I would have never started a relationship with him. I knew at the beginning that the relationship would not last. I began asking myself why I started it. At that moment, I felt the need to share my life experiences with other women who maybe experiencing the same thing.

I do not think I have celebrated the publication of my books, yet. When I sell enough books that my royalties can pay for a very nice one month getaway, then I will say that I have celebrated the publication of my books.

That is a good idea also. Of course there are lots of writer groups online. I have had two different authors give me positive feedback about the RRBC, Rave Reviews Book Club. That might be worth looking into also.
Those experiences are very painful, and are a catalyst for introspection for many people. Good on you for not falling into a pity party and taking a look at what was really going on in your life. It's so easy to coast along and follow the path of least resistance. That never gets us where we really want to be.
I love that goal of a celebratory trip! That is certainly worth working towards. Would you take a cruise? Where would you like to go?
New questions about writing.
Many writers make many drafts of their book as they seek to polish and perfect it. They pay particular attention to the first page and chapter. The common thought is, if you don't get a good hook in that first page or chapter, the reader probably won't finish your book. How many times did you rewrite the first page, first chapter?
Do you base your characters on people you know or have met, or is it easier to just invent them completely?

I appreciate your feedback; all of it.
My goal of a celebratory trip would be to start with a Perillo tour to Italy. Once I am in Italy, I would stay for a few weeks before returning home (if I decide to return home).
When writing the first page, it is the hardest to complete. I cannot count the times I rewrote my first page. I wanted to keep the readers’ interest. However, I was trying not to tell the whole story on the first page. I wish I could tell you the number of times I had to rewrite the first page and chapter; I wish I could remember. I do remember I had to buy additional cartridges multiple times monthly.
When I am writing about a life experience, it is much easier to invent my characters.

That sounds like a great tour! I have seen a lot of what was Western Europe in the 70s, but I never made it to Italy. I became ill and had to cut my trip short.
You confirm what almost every author has told me about the formidable first page and chapter. The first time I sat down to write a blog it was very intimidating. I empathize greatly.

When I began my first book, it was started on paper and transferred to my desktop computer. Whether I am watching TV or relaxing in the backyard, I would keep a notepad with me. Sometimes, I would be sitting outside meditating and a thought would come to me. So, I make sure I have something to write with near me.

When I write now, I use my laptop versus a desktop computer. When I am at home relaxing inside or outside, I have my laptop with me. I write using a Microsoft Word application. Because I am a visual person, I have to print my work to review it. Therefore, my process for reviewing my work is the same.

I think most every author writes on a computer these days. I have heard a few say they write on their phone. I use my phone for notes and reminders. But I can't imagine writing a book on my phone. Between my fumble fingers and rough voice dictation, it would be a colossal mess.
Your editing on a hard copy explains why you bought so many printer cartridges every month. It makes a lot of sense.

To me, you asked two questions that offset each other. I do not believe good marketing can overcome the limitations of a mediocre book. Also, I do not believe that a good book will sell itself. I believe that good marketing will sell a good book.
In addition, I believe that a mediocre and a good book need good marketing to make it known to society. For some a mediocre book is a good book. And for others, a good book may be a mediocre book. Whether you market a mediocre or a good book, society will decide. Therefore, to get a mediocre and a good book in the hands of society, it takes good marketing.

You are correct. Those two questions are like the two sides of a coin. It's always interesting how everyone answers them differently. In the age of self-publishing we live in, any book needs a lot of marketing. I think too many people are focused on the past where many books were very popular, mostly because there were very few other venues for personal and portable entertainment. We all know how much that has changed. There is a tremendous amount of competition for our eyes! What are we going to spend our entertainment currency on today? We have to answer that question many times a day.
You are also right that judging whether a book is good or mediocre is a very personal thing. The book that is universally acclaimed and loved by all has never been written. Every book has the potential to be loved by some, but never by all.
New questions.
Which of your books is your favorite, and why?
Do you have any problems when writing about characters of the opposite sex, why or why not?

If I had to choose my favorite book, it would be ‘learning from my mistakes.’ I believe learning from my mistakes shares true life experiences that would help young ladies never need to focus on the pitfalls of life that bring about unnecessary frustration. I know that we will experience always some unforeseen issues, but I believe focusing on who we are, where we are, who we are with, where we want to be, who we want to be with early in life, we can prevent some of the inevitable issues. I know I wrote in a redundant format but I really want women to understand that we can prevent ourself from experiencing some of the pitfalls in life. I believe young women must believe that it is okay to want something different than is expected.
No, I do not have problems writing about characters of the opposite sex. Romance is a natural way of life. Therefore, I have no problem writing about romance but in a clean manner. I prefer to share enough information in my writing to leave the intimacy of romance to the mind of the beholder. I like sharing intimate moments with my man and not share it with the world to see; in this manner I have a 100% old school tradition mentality.

Very good. Sometimes a little repetition can be very helpful. When my children were small, I would repeat the old saw "practice makes perfect". One day I realized that wasn't quite true, so I altered it to "practice makes permanent" am important truism in terms of habits good and bad.
In terms of romance, I am like you a little bit, less is more. Every detail does not have to be exposed and exploited.

Right now, I am enjoying the season. Christmas time is my favorite time of the year. I enjoy watching Christmas movies that entail Christmas songs. Next year, I hope to return to my writing. Once I have a title in mind, I will know the method in sharing my life experiences. Then, my thoughts will flow.

No, I do not have a particular genre in fiction I want to try. I focus on truth more than fiction.

You are taking a break. That is a good idea.
Christmas is a wonderful time of the year. It's my favorite holiday. Easter is a close second.
Now that we have grand kids it's even more fun to see how excited they get.

How do you deal with a difficult section in a WIP?
What non-writing skill could you learn that might prove to be useful for writing in the future?

When I have a difficult section in a WIP, I step away from it and do something different such as take a walk. For instance, I was reading a section in my book but it did not make sense; it did not have a good flow to it. It did not matter how I rewrote it, I could not make it better. So, I put it aside, took a walk, and waited at least two whole days before returning to it.

A non-writing skill that I may use in the future would be a phone recorder. I think a phone recorder would be useful because I would share my thoughts at a moment notice and review it later. For example, if I am experiencing something for the first time such as skiing or another exciting non-water sport, I would be able to record at that moment the feelings of it.

I think stepping away from the manuscript is a very good idea. A walk is a wonderful and refreshing idea. I have heard other authors mention they will do some cooking, or perhaps some gardening. Others talk about exercising or even working on another writing project.
Being able to dictate ideas into your phone is very handy. Especially because, if nothing else, most of us always have our phone close at hand. I certainly do.

Is there any particular time of the day that ideas usually hit you?

I never know when an idea will hit me. At any time of the day, I might get a good thought to write. Usually, I would be relaxing away from the TV, taking a walk, or waking up from a deep sleep.
I have no idea what my next book will be about. My next book can be about anything such as different types of adventures I explored.

That is certainly true for a lot of people! One author told me that almost every night, at 2:30 in the morning, she would wake up with ideas for her book. She really wished her muse would move into her time zone, so she could get some uninterrupted sleep!
A muse is really tough to guide, from what I have heard. Some authors report getting a certain amount of cooperation when they plan out a series of books. Some times their muse is late to the party, but eventually the muse shows up.
New questions.
Just to stimulate your muse. Have you ever thought about writing books for children? It could be interesting.
Another idea that might help is to take an art class.
Was it difficult to choose between self-publishing and traditional publishing?

I never thought about a children’s book as a muse or taking an art class to stimulate the mind. Thanks for the suggestion.
I never considered traditional publishing over self-publishing. I always was a do it yourself person. So when I searched for publishing my book and discovered self-publishing with Kindle, I reviewed the process. I found that publishing my book was very simple to complete with Kindle; so, I did not research any further.

Different authors find different ways to stimulate the flow of their creative juices. I heard of one author that took a course or two about how to make movies. The author said it provided a lot of great ideas for writing scenes that moved really well.
Amazon has really turned the publishing industry on its head. You found it easy to publish and so have millions of others. Amazon has millions of books available for sale. I think traditional publishers are a dying breed. At the last, there will probably be only one or two left. Most of the big book store chains are gone also. There are several Barnes & Noble stores in the greater Portland area, all the other big ones are gone. Small independent stores are doing pretty well, but they are struggling against Amazon and online book sales also.
A lot of authors are still chasing after a contract and/or representation to land a contract, only time will tell if this model can continue to exist. So many authors lose control of their book when they sign that contract. They give up their intellectual property rights for the term of the contract. The smart authors get a lawyer to preserve some of the ancillary rights such as movies and plays and foreign copywrites.
Oops! I guess I got stuck on my soapbox. More changes are coming.

Have you ever thought about doing an audio book?

Because of all the interviews you have done with authors, you appear to have a wealth of information to share. Thanks.
My goal is to sell more books while maintaining control of my rights. I need to pursue other avenues such as, a book trailer or transferring my books to audio. I need to do something different than what I am currently doing which is sharing on twitter. You know the old saying, ‘doing the same thing but expecting a different outcome;’ I need to start listening to it.

I have been talking with authors like this for over a year now, I think. I have learned a lot, more than I realized. I also read a number of blogs and have learned a great deal that way also.
There are many ways and venues to promote a book. Instagram, Facebook, I know a number of authors who use LinkedIn also. I am sure there are others I have no idea about. But there is a hidden trap, an author can spend so much time promoting a book that they get too busy to write another book. There is a balance to be maintained.
I have a short list of people who do audio books and a list of people who make book trailers also. I can't vouch for their work, it just provides a starting point for research.
Have you ever listened to radio plays? Before TV dramas and all kinds of stories were broadcast on the radio. There were some excellent productions. Now, audio books have taken that spot. Some have very high production values, sound effects, and different actors or voice artists. I reviewed and loved "The Day of The Martians" by HE Wilburson. Great story, done in the style of "The War of The Worlds" and as a sequel to it.
There is a lot of variety in book trailers also. Some are mini-movies, some are just a few slides and some music. There is much to consider.
I just had a thought, have you considered trying to sell your books to school districts for placement in their libraries? Your books might be just the thing a school counselor is looking for.

I agree with that to have my book at a school library would be idea. However, I think there is much red tape to have my book placed at a school library such as to know a school counselor. You know the saying, ‘it is not what you know but who you know.’ However, I will research it tomorrow. Thanks again.
My favorite motivational phrase that keeps me going is will this help someone else. I wish I could meet Oprah Winfrey and obtain her feedback on my books.

Promoting your books will not be easy, I can promise you that. It's one of the hardest nuts for authors to crack. Do you subscribe to other authors' newsletters? You might find that helpful.
That is a powerful phrase, wanting to help other people is very powerful. If more people did that this world would be a more pleasant place.
Meeting Oprah would be quite an interesting moment.

Because I have been living and working in suburban and urban regions, I find it hard to expose my books to schools or gain the notice needed for my books. I am ready to settle down in a rural like region. I think in rural areas I might be able to gain notice as a writer. In rural areas, I think I would be allowed to speak to college and high school students. In rural areas, I would contact or encourage the development of a book club. I am hoping that 2019 bring about a better year for me as a writer. I want to focus on finding that rural area; one place I am looking at is West Folks, Maine.

That is interesting. Relocating like that just might work. You talked about winter sports in your book so that would be a great place to live for a winter sport enthusiast. What is your favorite winter sports to participate in? Is the list different for watching?

If I am fortunate enough to get a job in or near West Folks, Maine, I would focus on skiing in my spare time. Of course, I would try all of the activities at least once to see if I like one more than the other. Because I am at my adventurous stage in life, I am willing to try other things. In order to write about my adventures, I like to experience it.
On average, it might take at least 2 hours to write about an idea. However, once I have a thought in mind, I am constantly thinking on it. Therefore, the 2 hours could easily turn into 5 hours or sporadically throughout the day. Once I have a thought in my mind, I have no control on when it will take control of my whole day. For instance, I could take a break and go to the store, then, I find myself expanding on my idea while searching for a food item.

One of my favorite sections from my book (learn from my mistakes): When we are young, our instincts are stronger. We should trust our gut when we are depending upon an adult for guidance. It does not matter where we live or how we live, we want someone who will lift us up. We want to socialize with people who will help us focus on our strengths.

It's amazing to me how inspiration can pop up at the most unexpected times. Even while performing a mundane task such as shopping or cleaning. You seem to make good use of those moments.
There must be a lot of good skiing in or around West Folks. In my college days I did a fair amount of cross country skiing and really enjoyed it. It was nice to get away from the crush of crowds. I found I really enjoyed the peace and quiet, my introvert-self had a great time.

My understanding on dealing with a major publisher is the cost I pay to them. To be honest, I think I would receive the same amount of exposure as I receive as a self-publisher.
When I write, I feel good about myself. I find myself exploring areas of my life that I would not normally explore. I like writing. I love it when I finish a chapter. So, I would say that I feel energize when I write, especially when I finish a specific section.

That's quite likely, most publishers expect the author to contribute heavily to the promotional effort. I have heard of some publishers once they list the book on their website, they are done and make no further efforts unless the author wants to pay them more money for one of several promotional packages.
Unless your name is near the top of a major list of best-selling books.
Many authors report feeling a sense of relief, especially after working through a difficult section, then the endorphins kick in and many contemplate a small reward of a favorite food or beverage.

Yes, it is important for writers to tap into the emotions of their characters. In order to draw the readers to the characters, the readers should be able to feel what the characters feel.

I go through countless drafts before I feel comfortable that my manuscript is ready for publishing.

Just about every writer out there thinks the same way, the connection for the reader to the characters is very important. As a reader, it's important to me, the characters come alive in my mind and I am able to connect with them personally.
Many writers work like you do, they go through quite a few drafts before they are very satisfied.
Our time is drawing to an end, so one last set of questions.
When you are writing, is it hard to think of names?
What is the process you go through to come up with a title for your books?
Are you working on a book now?

So far, I have no problem thinking of names to match the characters; it has been an easy process for me. When thinking of a title for my book, I think of the information I want to share. I think of the characters and what I will have them go through; then, I think of a book title. Right now, I am not working on a book. I find the holidays so distracting. I am kind of a Christmas fanatic. I watch every single Christmas program, especially when it has music included. So to focus on my new book, I would have so many unnecessary writer’s block. So I will wait until after Christmas to focus on my new book.

You are a lucky writer! Some authors agonize over the names and chapters. It's a real struggle for a few.
I think taking a break to enjoy the season is a darn good idea! You and my wife, you both love the Christmas movies! While, I don't watch very many, I do enjoy them when I see them.
