Multi-genre, multi-volume author Frances T. Pilch introduces us to her latest book, “Domestic Violence: Tragedy and Hope”:
Beginning with a discussion of the magnitude of the problem of domestic violence, the authors present a fictional narrative of "Suzanne," whose relationship with her intimate partner dissolves into abuse and violence, both physical and emotional. What follows is expert commentary on her story by law enforcement, a judge and former district attorney, victim advocate, therapist, and survivor, which provide a unique exploration of the tragedy of abuse and potential means by which it can be addressed. The main theme of the book is the tendency to "blame the victim" for staying in an abusive relationship and the need to understand why leaving can be so difficult and dangerous.

Almost all of us know someone who has experienced domestic violence in one form or another. I do. The impact on the abused and the abuser can last for generations and frequently does. This book highlights that issue and many other related problems.
I am glad the story of Suzanne and Rob is fiction. Yes, it was hard to read but it resonated with a lot of truth. The dysfunctions of their relationship were many and serious, as the dissection of the issues and events carefully points out.
This book needs to be read by everyone, especially the few who have not encountered or know anyone affected by domestic violence. Awareness of the issues and likely outcomes should make everyone vigilant for their friends and loved ones. The abusers need serious help but the abused need even more help to survive.
Domestic violence is a sad fact of our world. It’s pervasive and easily transmitted from generation to generation. Tremendous resources must be expended to prevent the occurrence of domestic violence, more to recover from it.
This book gets 5 stars from me for not only the detailed story but for the multi-disciplinary viewpoints expressed in the latter half of the book.
