Multi-volume, multi-genre author, Priscilla B. Shuler introduces us to her story, “Kuimba” set in the American South a little over 100 years ago: South Carolina, 1914. Ophelia Smith’s life changed completely when she heard his beautiful singing. After hours of hard labor, the first-time mother feels blessed when the blue-eyed baby comes out of the womb making sweet music instead of cries. Naming him Kuimba for his enthralling voice, she proudly shares him with others who become enamored with the newborn… unaware of an older boy whose eyes are filled with hate. Over the years, Ophelia watches in awe as her child grows up healing people through his touch and being visited by holy beings. But she struggles to protect him from the brutal attacks of a savagely jealous young man whenever he’s out of her sight. And when angels warn her that God has one more task for the youth before calling him back to Heaven, she fears the looming fate that threatens to take him away forever. Will Ophelia’s magnificent son achieve his destiny and bring light into the world? KUIMBA is a spellbinding standalone historical fiction novel. If you like captivating characters, spiritual wonders, and divine fate, then you’ll love Priscilla B Shuler’s religious southern tale. This story is set in the American South 1900s and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The title character is most unusual because he sings throughout the book. That is far from the most unusual thing about Kuimba. Much of the dialogue is heavily accented and that worked well for me because I have heard many southern accents. There is a lot of regional flavors, descriptions of the times, and mores of people who lived then. The other characters play very important parts also. I like the level-headed attitude that so many of them have. I also like how many of them experience drastic changes for the better as a direct result of knowing Kuimba. I award 4.8 stars to "Kuimba"! Multi-volume, multi-series, mystery author, Marni Graff introduces us to the fifth volume in The Nora Tierney English Mysteries series, “The Evening’s Amethyst”: Who is Verity? That becomes the central question for American writer Nora Tierney, who has moved to her new Oxford home with her fiancé, DI Declan Barnes, and her young son. Declan's new case at Exeter College coincides with a frantic call from Nora's stepsister, Claire Scott: a fellow graduate student has died in a fall, and Claire begs Nora to help her prove her friend didn't commit suicide. The sisters conduct their own snooping, while Declan and his tam juggle this death with a cold case that proves to be more surprising than Declan could ever imagine. I love Nora, don’t tell my wife or Declan. Her supporting cast adds so much depth to the story. Her life seems to be on the upswing in many ways. The author is very talented in weaving multiple stories into a cohesive and interesting plot! I was on the edge of my Kindle much of the way. The characters seem alive and quite three-dimensional. They struggle with everyday stresses and have worries just like us. Even the minor characters seem very organic in the story. A lot of the dialogue is witty and sometimes it is heartbreaking. The investigation proceeds at a reasonable pace and every step is realistic. I award 5 stars to "The Evening's Amethyst"! You can buy this book:

Schultz except for the author’s introduction Award-winning, multi-volume author, Mercedes Rochelle introduces us to her third volume in The Plantagenet Legacy, “The Usurper King”: From Outlaw to Usurper, Henry Bolingbroke fought one rebellion after another. First, he led his own uprising. Then he captured a forsaken king. Henry had no intention of taking the crown for himself; it was given to him by popular acclaim. Alas, it didn't take long to realize that that having the kingship was much less rewarding than striving for it. Only three months after his coronation, Henry IV had to face a rebellion led by Richard's disgruntled favorites. Repressive measures led to more discontent. His own supporters turned against him, demanding more than he could give. The haughty Percies precipitated the Battle of Shrewsbury which nearly cost him the throne—and his life. To make matters worse, even after Richard II's funeral, the deposed monarch was rumored to be in Scotland, planning his return. The king just wouldn't stay down and malcontents wanted him back. I have enjoyed this series so much! Mercedes takes a dusty and dry part of history makes pure entertainment out of it! I think she has a time machine because the actions and conversations seem so real, the people are real, whole and so organic. The things they do and say make a lot of sense. This is how people are, they worry first about their own well being and then they look to the welfare of those they love the most and the circle slowly expands. People today are the same as people back then. The writing is so good, Mercedes truly understands these people. Her powers of description provide the perfect balance with dialogue and action. There is lots of action also, love, bravery, murder and intrigue at all levels. I award 5 stars to “The Usurper King”! Considering all of the books Mercedes has written, this is the best! Multi-genre, multi-volume co-authors Krall and Barton introduce us to their collection of tales for the fall season: Travel the world and enjoy a collection of luxurious short stories with a paranormal edge from the writing desks of Bibiana Krall and Veronica Cline Barton. This 'spirited' anthology is guaranteed to give you the shivers and keep you reading late into the night with heady doses of mystery, haunted imagery and psychological suspense. Catch up and read Hearth Fires (Book #1) and get ready for an intense ride to places unknown. HVISKE (Norway) Here in the fjordic crags, each of us can be the victim of ourselves, the frozen death within waiting to be unleashed. I hear their silent whispers cry… ‘meg, meg, meg’. Most I choose to ignore, letting karma’s destiny of actions unfold. For those I extricate, the journey into the Northern Light or depth of darkness is swift. Choose wisely, hviske within. WIDOW’S WALK (Falmouth) After inheriting a historic mansion on the shores of Cape Cod. Abigail is consumed by grief for the loss of an incredible woman, and tormented by a childhood ghost that does everything possible to scare her out of her wits. When the troubling entity makes physical contact, it’s clear that Abby is in danger. Does the mysterious phantom want her dead? SCULPTURE OF THE DEAD (Aspen) I touch the cold, Colorado marble with my hands, running my fingers over the veins. I know when the stone matches the traits of the departed. Sculptural portraits, masks of the dead, fragments of limbs…the living think they want to remember their dearly departed with my creations. Sometimes it’s better to forget. SPIRIT ISLAND (Jasper) Seychelle is a free spirit, taking one day at a time and doing her best to help her family. When she accepts a creative assignment and experiences something, haunting and otherworldly in the wilderness… will it help her understand her own life better or carry her down a crooked and violent path she cannot return from? The past is alive. MODE de VEUVE NOIRE (Quebec City) Selfie, pose, look at me, I’m the fashion influencer you want to be. Follow, buy, so yesterday, darling--opinions, trends my ultimate worth. When wannabe, legend in her own mind Monique hits the streets of Quebec with an antique camera once owned by the famed Madame Coco, the photos she takes provide a stroke of famed acclaim, or dismal despair to those she hoped to install in her style hall of shame. The camera never lies, Madame. Click. Click. Click. RAGNO DAZANTE (Italy) Itsy, bitsy spider, dance, twirl and spin that tangled web. What waits for us on the other end of the cosmic red string? Aurelia has it all, a lush life in Italy, and fierce looks to match, yet she uses her power to dominate, mistreat and humiliate another woman. When Pietra finally embraces her dark birthright, the wicked game is afoot. Hoo, boy! I love these stories! I can’t decide which is my favorite. but I do know which one creeped me out the most. Spirit Island takes that top slot, followed closely by Ragno Dazante. RD thoroughly surprised me with the ending. I didn’t see that coming. Mode de Veuve Noir had an unexpected climax also. Hviske was quite surprising as well. I guess my favorite is between Widow’s Walk and Sculpture of the Dead. Anything that makes me laugh as much as those two stories did lands at the top of my list for humor. This is a perfect offering for the fall season we are in now. What is left unsaid is almost as important as the writing. Extrapolation is a mark of good writing! 5 stars from me! You can buy this book:

What was he up to when he disappeared, and who were the two ghosts once seen in his house? School friends Jamie and Todd are destined to find out when they go to London to spend a weekend with Jamie's Uncle Simon, who now lives in that very house. Soon after they arrive, Jamie has a frightening encounter with the two ghosts. Hector, a veteran from the First Afghan War, joined a covert expedition to China, and afterwards worked on a secret Government project in an underground lab at the British Museum. He vanished suddenly, and was never heard from again. Simon takes the boys to the lab, where they find a strange contraption - which, unknown to any of them, is a time-travel device. When the building is struck by lightning, the device is energised, and sends the boys back in time to the year 1862. There, surrounded by danger and exposed to disease, they are sucked into a life of crime in order to survive. Only if they can find Hector will they have any chance of getting home again. But why has he gone into hiding? Who is the man after him and what does he want? As the boys struggle to escape back to their own time, Jamie becomes convinced that the two ghosts he saw earlier are following them... Time Trap 2 Jamie and Todd are horrified to learn that the Grand Plan, which they thought had been defeated, is about to be implemented in 1775, America. Hector and Catherine have to go back in time and thwart Travis - an agent of the Grand Plan - who is hell bent on world domination. Jamie and Todd go with Hector and Catherine on a mission to 1775, to prevent a super gun from being used in the Battle of Bunker Hill, during the American War of Independence, but only have days to stop history from being altered.

With the help of his larger-than-life, best friend Rock, the engineers, his faithful pod keepers, a secret-keeping crow and a time-travel-enabling octopus, Kassius Kanex must expand his organization to levels even he did not dream to be possible. Can the world survive the evil long enough for Kassius to find the only thing powerful enough to stop it? The whole of humanity depends on one thing: EQUILIBRIUM. This has been an interesting and exciting journey in this series! The plots and subplots weave around each other quite well. Some of the events depicting the incarnate evil are somewhat horrific and bloody. Be warned. This style of writing reminds me of the golden age of science fiction and brings back fond memories of some great stories. The ending was very shocking also. I enjoyed the story a lot. Schultz except for the author’s introduction Debut author, Joyce A. Harvey introduces us to her memoir about the loss of her daughter, “Swan Lessons”: Swan Lessons: A Bereaved Mother’s Story of Courage and Discovery by Joyce A. Harvey is an account of military harassment, a series of poor decisions, and the desperate suicide of a young Lance Corporal. It describes the daunting challenge of a bereaved mother attempting to proceed with a public career in the midst of profound grief. It is also an amazing story of ongoing communication with the spirit of her daughter Jennifer, through dreams, signs, and spiritual mediums, including George Anderson. The author tackles tough subjects such as whether to pursue a wrongful death suit with the military. She also takes on clichés that are typically said to the grief-stricken and helps readers understand why they are better left unsaid. She shares dreams where she was “warned” that she might lose Jennifer and dreams in which Jennifer “visits” following her death. Ms. Harvey tells readers early in the book about her association of Jennifer’s death with the song “Vincent,” which refers to Vincent van Gogh’s suicide. Could the seemingly “coincidental” appearances of the song and references to Van Gogh be vehicles Jennifer uses to communicate with her mother from the afterlife? There are individual books on grief, suicide, dream work, after-death communication, spirituality, and abuse of power in the military. However, the author hasn’t found any examples written by a bereaved parent that combine all of these subjects into one book, as Swan Lessons does, helping readers to put it all together. As the book winds its way through the canyons of grief, it offers glimpses of hope, moments of utter astonishment, and examples of courage. The author skillfully weaves journal entries, as well as letters to and from Jennifer, to tell the story of a mother-daughter bond even death cannot sever. A powerful and well-written book! Though she describes it quite well, I find it very hard to imagine the grief that Joyce experienced. Isn’t that one of a parent’s worst nightmares? We, as parents, expect to pass on before our children. It seems the ordinary order of events. I have no reservation, in my mind, her pain was far worse than what she described. What she discovered after her daughter’s death is very fascinating. The communications from across the divide were extraordinary! I appreciate that she shared the good and the bad support she received from different people. Her extended family really stepped up to the plate. I award 4.9 stars to “Swan Lessons”. Meanwhile Hattie's ex-husband, Frank, has learned of Hattie's good fortune and it's eating away at him. He comes up with a plan to get some of Hattie's windfall for himself--a plan that will shatter Hattie's life and bring about her worst nightmare. That's when Hattie notices odd things happening. Small things at first--but the incidents escalate, until finally the unthinkable happens. Hattie does everything the police advise her to do. But as time passes and her life crumbles around her, it seems everyone fails her--law enforcement, a private detective, even her husband. Aided by her best friend, Celine, she sets out on a mission. Will she be able to take back what is hers? Or will she lose it all? I thoroughly enjoyed this story of a mother fighting to regain her daughter and life. The story is told in the first person and I love that for the intimacy it provides. The action builds up slowly as the ex-husband gets his plan rolling. The current husband is working his angle as well. I enjoyed the dialogue and the plotting quite a bit. The ending is so exciting! I am quite taken by the author's skillful blending of historical events from different time periods including the very recent past into the story. The texture of the story is so rich, it draws on many different fables, fairy tales and various types of literature. One of the unusual things that endear this book to me is the strong fantasy themes with a large dose of time traveling thrown in. Mortals, Gods, Devils, Dragons, Titans, Demons, Werewolves, Vampires and Angels clash in a never-ending battle of love and hate. The first book in the ALL, God of Nothing, starts the epic adventure. She was the first thing born, not created. Enraged that Aja survived, Silver, God of Death, forces her to make choices to protect those she loves. Will Aja save the ALL or destroy it? If she survives, will she hate herself for what she’s done? WARNING This work of fiction includes topics some may find offensive. There is no graphic sex, but numerous sexual situations, including LGBTQ+. Also, it has instances of blasphemy, vulgar language, smoking, drugs, violence, gore, and mentions rape. Due to the nature of this work, it is intended for people 18 years or older. This book is such a wild romp in the afterlife and the present, that I hardly know where to start. The characters are what make this book. If they weren’t so real and varied, I don’t think the story would work nearly as well. There are quite a few characters, also but the author pulls it off in a marvelous fashion. The plot is a coming-age story, it travels far and wide providing a great deal of entertainment, as Aja begins to find her place in the cosmos. Nora Tierney can't shake the feeling she has a stalker. While she's house hunting in Oxford, her partner, DI Declan Barnes, untangles the murder of an art conservator. When these situations collide, Nora finds herself fighting to save her child and the family she's trying to create. Ausma Khan, author of Among the Ruins and The Unquiet Dead praises THE GOLDEN HOUR: "One of the best things about Marni Graff's latest Nora Tierney Mystery is the down-to-earth depiction of family life coupled with the tightly paced build of a twisty, time-honored puzzle. A meditation on love, loss and motherhood, THE GOLDEN HOUR blends touchingly real domesticity with tongue-in-cheek humor, as the backdrop to a tale of art theft, germ warfare, and international conspiracy. The reflections of a reprehensible villain on the shortcomings of the British add just the right note of comedy to these otherwise weighty concerns. Added to this is a wonderful sense of place--Bath, Brighton, and Oxford are vividly rendered and charmingly true to life. Come for the crackling mystery, stay for the steady companionship of debonair detective Declan Barnes and feisty heroine, Nora Tierney, who offers warmth and smarts in equal measure." Sarah Ward, author of the DC Childs Mysteries, adds, "THE GOLDEN HOUR is a compulsive read with a narrative that both charms and surprises. I love Nora Tierney and can't wait to see what happens next." I really loved the story! The best thing for me was to see how real the characters were. They were well-rounded and fit their roles perfectly. They had realistic dreams, desires and frustrations. The conspiracy was cleverly managed too, everything was revealed in due course. I must admit to being quite puzzled in the beginning, appearances were very deceiving at times. If you enjoy a good detective mystery, you will love this story! Who could he trust to help him keep control of his criminal enterprises before it was too late? Who had the cold-blooded killer instinct and cunning required to do what his businesses required and would accept the mantle he had to bestow when his time came? No man in Chicago could fill his shoes, as far as he was concerned. But he knew a woman who could. It had been twenty years since Cyn Hardy breezed into Las Vegas from small-town Michigan, a wide-eyed eighteen-year-old innocent looking for excitement in her life. During that time she married the son of mobster Joe Spagnoli, became the owner of the largest call-girl service in Sin City, and survived the murders of her husband, then her father-in-law, and finally her twenty-year-old son. As she was immersed in grief, her father-in-law’s closest friend, Nick, sent for her. Cyn had something no one in Chicago had – Nick’s complete trust. And she owed Nick big time. So Cyn Spagnoli was back in the Mafia again, learning Nick’s gambling and loan-sharking businesses and his specialty – assassination, tapped to become his successor. I truly enjoyed this sequel to “Mafia Madame”! I loved the concept. Cynthia Spagnoli exemplifies the strong female protagonist. While grieving the deaths of her closest family in Nevada she steps up to the plate when asked to and accepts the responsibility wholeheartedly. This book is so well written. The authors make a great team. I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogues; the action was good and an appropriate amount of scene setting makes for an easy-to-read story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. All hope of his escape or release left him with the realization his people had no idea he was alive. He was once a great warrior who fought proudly and ferociously for the very same king who cast him aside. He didn’t know how, but he knew he would find his revenge. One man placed into the cell beside him gave him the knowledge needed to wage war across the kingdom of Ebrauc. All he would have to do was wait for the moment he would be free. That moment has come, and with it the opportunity to serve one of the most ancient gods of Britannia. But with all things comes a cost. This is a great sequel to Honor, the premiere of the Thrones and Soldiers series. This is wonderful dark historical fiction! There isn’t a plethora of information about the dark ages of Britain and Europe after the fall and contraction of the Roman Empire. The author does wonderful work to enrich the dry, dusty bones of this dark period of time. The multitude of characters are quite individual and realistic in their actions and conversations. The scene setting is well-balanced and supports the characters perfectly without taking over the story. I loved this book so much! I give it a score of 4.8 stars. You can buy this book:

Then the pandemic happened. And cruising was interrupted. Cruising Interrupted will fascinate anyone who has ever cruised, aspires to take a cruise, or just loves travel. At the same time, Cruising Interrupted acknowledges the influence on cruising of the Covid-19 pandemic, the most significant event in the history of cruise travel since the sinking of the Titanic. I admit that I have never been on a cruise. After reading this book, I really want to go cruising now. I can’t decide if I should focus on a destination or on the ship itself. All ships have their advantages and disadvantages. Each itinerary has pros and cons as well, and they all seem so exciting. I am far better equipped to make a wise choice after reading this book. I love the author’s style of writing, part investigative journalist and part close friend, he really makes the selection process easier. Schultz except for the author’s introduction Finding My Voice and Surviving Childhood Sexual AbuseDebut author, Shirley Aumack introduces us to her memoir about healing from child sex abuse: All She Ever Wanted Was to Believe She Was Loved When she quietly confronted her father asking him to stop sexually abusing her as a little girl, she got this tirade from her father: "No one cares what I do to you. I don't love you, no one loves you, and no one will EVER love you." How does a little girl ever heal from this? Compounding the pain of this horrific, inhumane message and the sexual abuse starting when she was eight years old was having a mother who was emotionally vacant. Shirley Aumack never received any affection from her, never heard the words, "I love you" or any such affirming messages. She never attempted to tell her mother about the abuse and never found anyone to confide in who would believe her. It is common for people who have endured such hellish abuse to overcompensate their feelings of low self-worth by excelling at everything they do. And Shirley is no exception. Throughout her life, she has excelled at everything--academically, professionally, personally as a mother, wife, friend, and in every role she has impressively had love as her guiding force. Lois Einhorn, PhD, author of Forgiveness and Child Abuse: Would YOU Forgive? writes about PLEASE BELIEVE ME: "Shirley is a gifted storyteller making the book a quick read. But her messages will stay with me for a very long time. She covers unflinchingly details of her life including her despair and devastation. But her book is not only of surviving but also of thriving. In addition to horrifying images, she includes laugh-out-loud stories. Ultimately this book is inspiring and empowering, hopeful and healing. Shirley's life serves as a testament to the preciousness of all life, the transformative power of love, the triumph of the human spirit, and the need for humor." It is an astonishing and well-written story. As difficult as the subject may be, the author does not hesitate to share the devastating experience of being raped by her father and the lifelong effects. These effects were made worse by her empty, egocentric mother. The pastor of her church failed her also for reasons we will never know. Her writing is very clear and the good and the bad are shared with appropriate humor. Her children are a testimony to her efforts to care for them much better than she was cared for by her own parents. I award 4.8 stars to “Please Believe Me”. You can buy this book:

Cullens introduces us to his eco-fiction adventure “Togwotee Passage”: An impassioned, thought kindling journey on a wilder side of life, from youth to passing, with a breadth of charged life experiences. In 1940s Wyoming, a seven-year-old under the yoke of a dysfunctional family is beginning his life journey with stumbling steps. When an intervention whisks him reluctantly away, he faces new challenges in a sweeping wilderness setting, where a sustaining influence is the friendship of a Shoshone youth with differing cultural values. On into the treacherous terrain of life's chaotic landscape, with his mettle tested time and again he is increasingly rankled with civilization's Janus-faced ways and ill-conceived progress. Mitigating his irritation, is a distracting fascination with the wonderment and paradoxes of the natural world. That is, until he considers where humankind's varying proclivities stem from. -------------------------------------- Togwotee (toe'-ga-tee) is the name of a challenging mountain pass in the Absaroka Mountains of northwest Wyoming. As used in the title of this fictive tale, it's an apt metaphor for the protagonist's life path. The story is character driven, contains Native American mythology, has an entwined thread of natural world interconnectedness, and is complemented with expressive illustrations. I really enjoyed this story. While I didn’t grow up in 1940s Wyoming, I grew up on small farms in Oregon and Washington in the 1960s. I was reminded of the many wonderful hours I spent in the woods, it was my sanctuary. The scene-setting was excellent, I could plainly see what the author was describing. The dialogues were good also, downright funny at times. The action was very satisfactory, though it wasn’t extensive. I really enjoyed the relationship Cullen had with Derek, his Shoshone friend. A lot of good-natured bantering surrounded by a secure relationship. Each man walked his own path and respected the path of his friend. I award 4.7 stars to “Togwotee Passage”. You can buy this book:

Samuel, a young man about to begin his sophomore year of high school, accepts a job that culminates in a chemical explosion—leaving Samuel with severe burns on his face, neck, and arms. The tragic and sudden accident sets Samuel on an unpredictable journey of healing, recovery, and acceptance. In the wake of the accident, Samuel endures grief, pain, and numerous surgical procedures for the scars on his body. He grapples with his appearance, faith, and the loss of friends. Through it all, he comes to view his scars as an unavoidable part of the human experience. Whether physical, emotional, or spiritual, we all carry scars—and it is simply what we choose to do with them that defines us. Samuel’s story allows us to see him for who he truly is, while also turning a mirror on ourselves. Can You See My Scars? explores questions about identity, suffering, purpose, and ultimately, what it means to be uniquely human. This is one of the best memoirs I have read in quite a while. It is shocking, but encouraging. Samuel remained very candid about his emotional and mental condition throughout the accident and the years-long recovery. His struggle with matters pertaining to his faith was very real and comprehensible. The scene-setting was good, dialogue worked well throughout the story. The conclusion of the book was very satisfying. I award 4.8 stars to “Can You See My Scars?”. You can buy this book:

When Duke William of Normandy landed at Pevensey on September 28, 1066, no one was there to resist him. King Harold Godwineson was in the north, fighting his brother Tostig and Harald Hardrada at Stamford Bridge. How could this have happened? Why would Tostig turn traitor to wreak revenge on his brother? Harold and Tostig were not always enemies; it took a massive Northumbrian uprising to tear them apart, making one an exile and the other his sworn enemy. After Edward the Confessor died and Harold took the crown, Tostig was intent on reclaiming his earldom. But he was on his own; his brother was not sympathetic. In fact, Harold allied with Tostig's enemies. What else could he do? This is a stupendous climax to the series. I absolutely love how this historical-fiction novel is structured using first-person POV. The dialogues and inner thoughts of each main character in turn carries the story forward so well. It really makes the history come alive. The scene-setting is quite well done also, especially the scenes of battles. Just like life in the Middle Ages, the action is very intense and brutal at times, but only to fit the needs of the historical events. The entire series is binge worthy! I want to read it all again. Can Patty even hope to salvage the life around her? Will solving the murder of a friend also result in her getting killed? I am really enjoying the continuing saga of Patty, AKA Potato Woman to some of the residents in her senior trailer park. No matter how hard she tries to fit in, which isn’t very hard much of the time, the bodies continue to appear. What else is a self-respecting mystery writer to do except figure out whodunit? Peterson introduces us to the newest book in his series, “Warriors of the Galaxy”: EVERY GENERATION HAS A LEGEND . . . Sara didn't start out expecting to change the world. She inherited it from her dad and grandad. But she didn't expect it. For much of her early years, Sara thought her family was pretty weird, and there seemed to be plenty of evidence to prove it. Her late grandfather Pete Stevenson, maybe the weirdest of all, was an automotive engineer whose hobby was trying to chase down proof of aliens and time-travel all over the world. Incidents through the years seemed to suggest that Grandad had indeed come across compelling evidence that alien presence was real. Informed speculation regarding alien presence had now become irrefutable fact. For the longest time, Sara didn't think she'd inherited the weirdness gene, but boy, was she wrong. Now Sara Steele has become the Warrior Princess, and together with a strong team of outliers and overachievers, enters an unknown future built on a disruptive present following an inaccessible past. Here we are, the third volume of a five-volume set. We are going places and fast! The action is really picking up and much of it is not on Earth. I am loving this story more with each new volume. The dialogue continues to be delightful and the action is plentiful. Science and scene setting are quite good also. I find no gaps in either. Disclaimer: I am not a rocket scientist or theoretical physicist, nor do I play one on TV. The characters are really growing on me. Picking up where Lost ended, Endow takes Emily, Amanda, and Kiami, on a dangerous trip through the realms. Amanda is determined to prove that the stones they were given are the very ones from the ancient myth. To do so she may have to divulge a few of her dark secrets. But a powerful storm is on the horizon, one that crackles with magical energy, and it throws them off course. Taking the opportunity to get Emily to accept a leading role, Amanda pushes her at every turn. She needs her to see the warrior that she knows lurks deep inside. Kiami’s customary optimism is quelled as more truths are unveiled. An encounter with the wizard Bloise may give them answers, but she fears it will cost them too, and even after he explains the source of her inherited powers, she is left feeling like she’s running and getting nowhere. When Amanda is reunited with her mother, it is not the happy encounter she once imagined. In a world soon to be at war, she realizes their curses were meant to cause the planet’s destruction. Can they be used for salvation instead? This is a marvelous continuation of the series. We get to know the characters so much better, they are becoming our best friends, but not necessarily to each other. There is a lot of friction between the characters, on multiple levels at times. Secrets! There are so many secrets, sometimes it seems they may drown in the secrets. This book has a nice balance of narration, dialogue and action. There is some wild action also! No spoilers from me, though! Now, I can hardly wait for the conclusion of the series. I know it’s going to be exciting and delicious! The plotting and storytelling are improved. On April 17, 1978, the U.S. Coast Guard seized the aging freighter 140 miles off Washington State’s coast with its hold loaded with 37 tons of marijuana—the west coast’s largest pot bust—worth an estimated street value of $74 million. Drug agents later seized the sleek Joli, a 61-foot sailboat, for its suspected role in the case. A past winner of the prestigious Victoria to Maui sailboat race, the Joli had been purchased from William Niemi, Jr., former president of Eddie Bauer, by champion freestyle skier Mike Lund. The attorney for the captain of the Helena Star, author Stewart Riley, provides an insider’s unvarnished account of the case from the trenches. The freighter and the conspirators involved were in the news from its seizure in 1978 to its death by sinking in 2013. This drug bust and the ensuing events comprise a true saga about the inner workings of a Colombian-American drug cartel, smuggling on a massive scale, money laundering, the capture of fugitives in Bolivia, suspicious deaths, the lives of high-profile individuals, and courtroom battles in Seattle and San Francisco. What a great story and all true or alleged to be true. With all of the dodges and dives, faking and lies, it would be hard to make this up. It demonstrates the truism of human nature that each person is looking out for their own self-interests first. It is how we are built. This story was fun to read, it reminded me of when I saw this case in the news on TV. I was married and our first child was on the way. I recall thinking that someone had a lot of audacity to try and pull it off. Now I know the rest of the story behind the headlines, some forty years later. I am very happy to have learned the whole tale. Stewart is a good storyteller. I enjoyed his style; it is matter-of-fact prose. He doesn’t embellish a lot and doesn’t speculate a great deal beyond the obvious. Being on the inside of this case he was privy to far more than any mere mortal. He let the people involved speak for themselves whenever possible. This tale of intrigue and skullduggery doesn’t get lost in the weeds, the story moves along quite well, as all of the loose ends are eventually wrapped up. I award 5 stars to “Helena Star”. Terra Prime – the cradle of humanity – was gone. One moment the center of the colonized universe, the next, a gaping emptiness that would come to be known only as The Void. Left without answers and without a tether to their shared humanity, mankind has continued. For hundreds of years, they have spread across the galaxies, colonizing planets, while the history of their home, the truth of Terra Prime, has fallen into myth and legend. But in every world, there are those who wander and search for more. There are those who long for a home beyond planets run by corrupt governments and flawed ideologies. There are those like Captain Singer and his crew aboard the Waylay, seeking a better life among the stars. With the Alliedcorp fleet behind them, Jason, Bree, and Mark are left reeling from their time in captivity with more questions than answers about those responsible. But while Bree struggles to process what was done to her during her capture, Ell’s recovery is taking longer than expected, leaving her family aboard the ship wondering if she’ll be able to find her way back to them. With unanswered questions and dangers mounting, the crew of the Waylay finds themselves facing an even greater threat than before with only the bond they’ve forged to protect them. But will it be enough this time? This is a very worthy sequel to “Alpha Dawn”! I love the short chapters and rotating point of view; each chapter is devoted to a single point of view. The story moves forward smoothly. I recommend reading the books in sequence, the story in this volume will be much richer if you do. It could also be fun to read this one first, I do like reading a book more than once, in quick order, the second reading reveals more details. The scene setting is pretty good, the action is even better, but it is the dialogue that really makes the difference. The characters are fully fleshed out and they are growing. This is not just guts and gore; this book is quite well written. The main characters are fully developed and have serious struggles, some of them are in a lot of emotional pain. Some don’t handle the pain very well. Do any of us? The settings are pretty good, and the dialogue is excellent. The action is gruesome enough for serious fans of the genre.
