My granddaughter. Her love of the night sky and interest in celestial bodies was infectious. So, I decided to write a story for her. At first, I was not going to publish, but later decided a book would be a special keepsake for her. Little did I realize at the time that this little story would take on a life of its own.

I wrote this book over the span of two years. It was my first effort to write anything creative, so I took my time writing it. I wanted it to be special because of being dedicated to my granddaughter.

That is so sweet! We have six grandkids in all; five of them are girls! We love our grandchildren and are lucky enough to live with three of them.

Your first book turned out well. The time was spent wisely, I am sure. You learned a lot and Righteous Allegiance benefited from your experience.

Yes. I am blessed with a family that is very supportive and enthusiastic about my writing. They are wondering about what is next after surprising them with RIGHTEOUS ALLEGIANCE.

I will keep writing children's stories, in addition to adult fiction. I find them very rewarding to create and share with children and adults alike. Seeing the look of joy, and then curiosity on a child's face when you hand them your book-warms my heart. Positive feedback and reviews from parents only further ignites my desire to keep producing fun and meaningful stories for children.

I think that's brilliant! Besides the satisfaction you derive from the excited children, you can always jump to another genre if you are blocked in the current WIP. After all, no rule prohibits having more than one WIP. And there is no rule that requires a story to be written in order. I tell authors to write the easiest chapters first. Have you ever seen a ghost, spirit guide or had some other type of supernatural experience?

I have many spirit guides; my Native American grandmother is most prominent. She sometimes appears during Dreamtime, usually when I have been in a tough situation or need special guidance. She raised me and as a child I spent hours with her in the forest where she taught me about the plants and animals and the stories and sacred rituals associated with them. The time I spent with her was grand.

Your grandmother taught you a lot. It's wonderful that she was able to raise you instead of a stranger.

I learned a little bit about forest craft and living in harmony with the land as a Boy Scout. I am sure your grandmother taught you far more than I ever knew.

I am probably slower than most authors in filling up the page. My thoughts may linger longer on a scene, a character… I’m patient to a fault wanting to get it right. In short, I hold myself accountable to bring my best efforts, no matter how long it takes or how difficult the challenge.

I do not have a writing technique that follows a specific genre formula. I eschew genre guidelines, especially from organizations and associations who believe themselves to be THE authority. I write intuitively and enjoy the freedom.

Writing the story as well as you can is a sign of a good writer. If the story can't be told right, then the story might not be ready to be shared or the writer needs to learn something new.

Many writers stray from strict genre guidelines; sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. One of the good things about writing is the story can be changed; it won't be perfect the first time or the first draft.

I worked with an Italian artist/illustrator. For the cover and the story images. We corresponded by email. I sent her detailed written descriptions of the cover and the scenes I wanted in the book. She was very skilled and for all of the images, including the cover, only two drafts were required at most.

You found an artist who was a great fit for this book! Your descriptions made a big difference for her without a doubt. Clarity always helps.

If you write more books for children, will you use the same artist?

At first glance, the cover seems obvious, but I frequently miss a detail or two. What do the elements on the cover represent?

I will, and am writing more for children. However, for the projects I am envisioning I will not use the same artist because there are other artists out there who I feel may be better fits for the projects I am envisioning. Who are they? - To be determined.

Mark, I can see why at first glance you may miss certain details on the cover of IMAGINE THAT: THE MAGIC OF THE MYSTERIOUS LIGHTS. It can appear subtle. A little girl is looking at the night sky and pointing at something. Is it lights? Stars? Perhaps it is something else. This is just one example of how I am encouraging the imagination of the reader to challenge themselves in recollecting or creating a script of their own. The elements on the cover represent a happy child filled with wonder. She loves spending time in her backyard gazing at the beauty of the night sky. What does she think about? Is something going to happen? It makes me happy you personally enjoyed the story.

That's great! A mysterious cover matches a story about mysterious lights! Right on theme.

Don't judge a book by its cover! That old axiom was meant to encourage the buyer to withhold judgment until the story was read. That meaning hasn't changed. A cover has always been important, but with Amazon publishing two million books a year, a good cover has never been more important. Enticing a prospective buyer to look at your book for more than half a second is critical.

It was not difficult to come up with the title. I thought about the elements in the story and listed them. I tried different combinations over the course of several days until IMAGINE THAT: THE MAGIC OF THE MYSTERIOUS LIGHTS felt right.

Lucky guy! The title came together well for you. Many authors struggle with crafting a perfect title. Some authors don't find their title until much of the book is written.
